Phase separation in mixtures of ionic liquids and water.
The phase separation of ionic liquids (ILs) in water is studied by laser light scattering (LLS). For the ILs with longer alkyl chains, such as [C(8)mim]BF(4) and [C(6)mim]BF(4) (mim = methylimidazolium), macroscopic phase separation occurs in the mixture with water. LLS also reveals the coexistence of the mesoscopic phase, the size of which is in the order of 100-800 nm. In aqueous mixtures of ...
متن کاملProperties of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and water mixtures
2,2,2-trifluoroethanol ~TFE! is a commonly used cosolvent in experimental studies of peptides and proteins. Although concentration-dependent TFE effects have been well studied experimentally, the exact mechanism by which TFE affects the solubility and stability of peptides is still unclear. Here we report molecular dynamics simulations of TFE/water mixtures of different composition in an attemp...
متن کاملProperties of Water Confined in Ionic Liquids
The varying states of water confined in the nano-domain structures of typical room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated by (1)H NMR and by measurements of self-diffusion coefficients while systematically varying the IL cations and anions. The NMR peaks for water in BF4-based ILs were clearly split, indicating the presence of two discrete states of confined water (H2O and HOD). Prot...
متن کاملHydrogen bonding and the cryoprotective properties of glycerol/water mixtures.
Molecular dynamics simulations and infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the hydrogen bond patterns of glycerol and its mixtures with water. The ability of glycerol/water mixtures to inhibit ice crystallization is linked to the concentration of glycerol and the hydrogen bonding patterns formed by these solutions. At low glycerol concentrations, sufficient amounts of bulk-like water exist...
متن کاملWater and anomalous liquids
Water is an anomalous liquid because its properties are different from those of the majority of liquids. However, the category of anomalous liquids could be greater than what so far supposed. Here, we review what is anomalous about water, which are the other liquids that are as well anomalous, and which are those that could be anomalous. We ask questions such as: Why water is anomalous? Are the...
